Sunday School

Nicholas is concentrating on putting the cap back on his marker after doing his doggy craft during his Sunday School class.

Elm Street Congregational Church Sunday School was organized in 1818, and has run continuously since that time. Today, we offer Sunday School for all children preschool - eighth grade during the Sunday morning worship, from September through June. Nursery care for children under 3 is also available. In our work with children and youth in their faith formation, the goals are not to impart a series of facts, but are part of a process to encourage the young people to be active participants in our community of faith. Our guiding principle is from Luke’s gospel, Luke 18:8b: “When the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?” As our children grow in their faith, they experience it and live it differently. We encourage the children and youth to experience their faith through prayer, drama, art, reading and service. As they grow and mature, we encourage them to hear God’s call in their lives. The partnership between church and home is a key component of our Sunday School model. Using the Gather ‘Round curriculum, there are many opportunities for parents, grandparents and caregivers to build on the lessons taught each week in Sunday School. Family members are encouraged to join us in the classroom, and to utilize the tools, like the Connect workbook, the Talkabout It activity, and the children’s book list, to continue the message throughout the week. Gather ‘Round is a bible-story based curriculum, nurturing children, youth and adults to become followers of Jesus. This quarter, our theme is Living the Good News Together, and we are hearing the stories of Paul’s travels from the book of Acts. In Fall, 2008, we will continue with Judgement & Hope, learning the stories of Samuel, David, Solomon and Amos.
